The Wood County Sheriff's Office has many duties. It is responsible for collecting taxes, enforcing the law, providing security for local courts, provides road patrol to the rural areas of Wood County, overseeing the Holding Center, and transporting prisoners to the Regional Jail. The Sheriff's Office is comprised of 38 Deputies, including the Sheriff, Jeff Sandy, 14 reserve deputies and 11 Contract Officers. Tax collection is now done at the newly renovated Judge Black Annex (Previously Town Square).

Wood County is the only county in West Virginia with its own helicopter, which has proved invaluable in the detection and eradication of illegal crops.
